Steven L. Thompson is an award-winning, best-selling novelist, magazine journalist, historian, illustrator, and pilot who has been riding motorcycles since November 1963 and racing them since March 1967. As a member of Team Cycle World, in 1985 he helped capture three world speed records and raced in 1987 at the Isle of Man TT, lapping at over 101mph. He has been Editorial Director of Cycle Guide, Editor-at-Large of Cycle World, Editor-in-Chief of Road Test, Executive Editor of Car and Driver, Senior Contributing Editor of AutoWeek, Executive Editor of AOPA Pilot, Consulting Editor of Air & Space/Smithsonian, and is currently an Advisory Editor of Technology & Culture and Outside Editor of RANGE. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, and currently lives with his wife and a Manx cat named Rascal in Northern California.
